Double-Coat Care Guide: Huskies, Goldens & More

Huskies, Goldens, and other double-coated breeds have two layers of fur:

  • a dense, soft undercoat for insulation
  • a longer, protective topcoat that repels dirt and water

This combo makes them gorgeous—but also prone to heavy shedding, mats, and skin issues if not cared for properly. Here’s a recommended routine:

🪮 Brushing Routine

Frequency: At least 3–4 times per week (daily during shedding season in spring/fall).

Tools:

Undercoat rake → reaches through topcoat to loosen shedding undercoat.

Slicker brush → smooths and detangles outer coat.

Comb → useful for feathering areas (tail, ears, legs) to prevent mats.

Tip: Work in layers, starting from the skin outwards, instead of just brushing the surface.

🛁 Bathing Routine

Frequency: Every 6–8 weeks, or after mud/odor incidents (not more often unless needed).

Shampoo:

Mild, moisturizing, pH-balanced dog shampoo (avoid human shampoos).

Consider an oatmeal or aloe formula for sensitive skin.

Conditioner/Rinse: Light conditioner or leave-in detangler to prevent static and mats.

Drying:

Never leave damp undercoat—moisture trapped under thick fur can cause hot spots.

Towel dry then cool blow-dry until fully dry.

🥦 Nutrition for Coat & Skin

Base Diet: High-quality dog food with animal protein as the first ingredient.

Key Nutrients:

Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon oil, sardine oil, flaxseed) → reduce shedding, improve shine.

Vitamin E & biotin → support skin barrier and coat strength.

Zinc → especially important for northern breeds like Huskies (deficiency can cause flaky skin).

Tip: Avoid filler-heavy kibbles (corn, soy, wheat), which may worsen shedding and skin issues.

🌿 Skin Care & Maintenance

Check hot spot areas: under collar, behind ears, belly, tail base—keep them dry.

Seasonal Shedding (“blowing coat”): Use de-shedding tools sparingly; overuse can damage the coat.

Moisturizing Sprays: Light, dog-safe leave-in sprays with aloe or oatmeal can soothe dry skin.

Ear Care: Thick-coated breeds often have heavy ear flaps—check weekly for wax buildup or odor.

Golden Rule: Never shave a double coat—it ruins the coat’s natural insulation and protection. Regular grooming is the safer, healthier way to manage shedding and mats.
